Work in progress: The concrete structures, laid for the joggers track in Kottivakkam, being demolished on Friday.
TAMBARAM: An incomplete joggers’ track near the Kottivakkam beachfront, work on which was taken up under a scheme of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), was demolished by officials of the Revenue Department on Friday.
The entire 300-metre stretch of the track was demolished using earthmoving equipment under the supervision of senior officials of the Kancheepuram district administration. A police team provided protection for the team.
The demolition followed an order of the Madras High Court on a public interest litigation petition filed by an environmentalist, N.Srinivasan.
The officials had come to implement the court order last week, but had to stop work in the wake of intense protests from fisherfolk in the hamlets of Tiruvanmiyur, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Injambakkam and Neelankarai.
The track, officials said, was laid at a cost of Rs.17.50 lakh to enable early morning walkers have a comfortable stroll.
The work was abandoned following a court stay, officials of the St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union said.
