Upset wins for Tanvi, Garima

Gurgaon: Tanvi Shah and Garima Vatwani upstaged better-seeded players as three Indians made it to the semifinals in the girls’ section in the ITF Junior Grade IV tennis tournament at the National Tennis Academy here on Thursday.

The fifth-seeded Tanvi defeated Israel’s Margarita-Greta Skripnik 6-3, 6-1 in the top half of the draw before unseeded Garima shot out Valentina Starkova of Kazakhstan 6-4 7-6(4).

The results:

Boys: Karunuday Singh bt David Thomson (Gbr) 6-2, 6-0, Jamesh Richardson (Gbr) bt Shantanu Rajput 6-0, 6-3, Mathew Thomson (Gbr) bt Chandril Sood 6-2, 6-4, Abhijeet Tiwari bt Priyank Gangadharan 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Girls: Sweta Kumari Solanki bt Sevil Aliyeva (Aze) 6-3, 6-3, Tanvi Shah bt Margarita-Greta Skripnik (Isr) 6-3, 6-1, Garima Vatwani bt Valentina Starkova (Kaz) 6-4, 7-6(4), Angelika Aliev (Isr) bt Prerna Bhambri 6-2, 7-5.
