CELEBRATION TIME: Ernakulam, riding on the brilliant run of St. George HSS and Mar Basil HSS (both Kothamangalam), asserted its supremacy.

KOTTAYAM: Ernakulam, riding on the brilliant run of St. George HSS and Mar Basil HSS (both Kothamangalam), retained the overall championship as the athletic events of the 51st Kerala School Games concluded at the Nehru stadium here on Wednesday.

St. George and Mar Basil also were the winners of the first and second positions for the Best School awards.

Together, they tallied a whopping 300 points out of the 375 logged by Ernakulam.

Incidentally, it was also four-in-a-row for St. George HSS (184 points) in the race for the top honour as the Best School. Palakkad (164) was a distant second in the overall points tally while host Kottayam and Kozhikode shared the third spot with 87 points each.

Reigning supreme

Ernakulam, besides the overall title, also took the team championship titles in all but one of the six age-groups, leaving only the sub-junior girls’ title to Palakkad.

Four new meet records were created on the final day, which saw athletes from the Usha School of Athletics make a clean sweep of the three 100m golds in the girls’ sections.

Among the trio, C. Shilpa was the most impressive performer as she also erased the existing meet mark in the senior girls’ 100m dash.

Establishing her supremacy over the rest of the field right from the start, the 11th standard student of Government HSS (Koyilandy) was challenged by Ernakulam’s E.M. Indulekha towards the finish. But Shilpa held on to her early lead as she finished in 12.10s. Indulekha, who was timed at 12.20s, also bettered the old mark of 12.30s set by E.S. Jyothi in 2003.

Desty shines

Desty Sunny, also the eventual individual champion in her section, was a start-to finish winner in the junior girls’ 1,500m.

The 16-year-old St. George athlete, who clocked 4:44.04s, despite the lack of challenge also bettered the existing mark for the event, 4:46s, set by Shameena Jabbar in 2004.

Lijo’s distinction

Lijo Mani, one of the three athletes who finished with a triple gold, celebrated his golden treble with a record-breaking effort in the sub-junior boys’ 600m.

Here again, the 13-year-old Kudianmala Mary Queens HSS student, hardly faced any challenge from the rest of the field to return home in 1:26.86s.

The existing mark of 1:26.90s was set by T. Sawnthar Raj in Palakkad last year.

Mark improved

Antony Jose (St. Thomas HSS, Pala) improved upon the current meet record of 4.05 (set by Dhaneesh Stephen in 2006) to 4.15m as he won the senior boys’ pole vault gold in style.

G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram (231 points) took the overall championship trophy in the Sports Division section ahead of Government HSS, Kannur (212).

The Public Works Minister, Mons Joseph, gave away the trophies at the valedictory function presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Kerala Legislative Assembly, Jose Baby.
