Rich haul for Indian boxers

NEW DELHI: Indian boxers returned with a rich haul as Commonwealth champion Sunil Kumar struck gold, while Rakesh Kalaskar settled for a silver in the Asian junior championship, which concluded at Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Sunday.

Five other pugilists won bronze medals as India finished a creditable second behind Kazakhstan in the 17-team competition. Flyweight Sunil, who won the Commonwealth gold medal at Liverpool early this year, won over his opponent from Kyrgyzstan 23-12 in the 51kg final.

Sandeep Malik (48kg), S. Santosh Singh (54kg), Manjeet Singh (75kg), Parmoj Kumar (81kg) and Praveen Kumar (above-91kg) were the bronze medal winners.
