Modi hits back at Sonia Gandhi

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hit back at Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who called the Modi administration a “dishonest government of liars” and “peddlers of death” at her public meetings on Saturday. Mr. Modi accused the Congress of “protecting” terrorists such as Afzal Guru, who had been given the death sentence by the Supreme Court.

Mr. Modi, who addressed a series of public meetings in Surat and other parts of south Gujarat, said Ms. Gandhi should have checked her party’s credentials before accusing him.

The people of Gujarat knew who fought against the terrorists and who “protected” them.

He said he would not allow “terrorists” to set foot in Gujarat, but the Congress always had a “soft corner” for “anti-national elements” and was “moving heaven and earth” to “save Afzhal Guru from the gallows.”

The former vice-president, Venkaiah Naidu, described her comments as most “unfortunate.”
