‘350 cases of malaria recorded, but no deaths’

Government acknowledges death of seven persons due to diarrhoea


HYDERABAD: The State Government has admitted that there are 350 cases of malaria and that there is no loss of life since January in the tribal villages of Adilabad district, which are prone to high incidence of fever. At the same time, the Government also acknowledged the death of seven persons due to diarrhoea as 729 cases under this head were recorded during the period.

This information was presented to Governor N.D. Tiwari by Health and Family Welfare Minister Sambani Chandrasekhar on the basis of Adilabad Collector’s report on Sunday.

The report reviewed the position of fevers in 638 villages of the badly affected agency in the mandals of Narnoor, Jainur, Sirpur-U, Utnoor and Indravelli.

The Government maintained that 121 persons died of fevers other than malaria in the five mandals and another 16 non-malarial deaths were recorded elsewhere in the agency area of the district.

The disease-wise break-up of the 121 deaths from January to December 1 include: fever with convulsions 26; convulsions 13; anaemia 15; jaundice 6; diarrhoea 7; viral pyrexia 9; pyrexia of unknown origin 10, sunstroke 9; asthma 3; alcoholic cirrhosis 4; meningitis 4 and food poisoning 4.

Among 16 deaths in other parts of the agency areas, four were caused by convulsions and two by jaundice. There were 36 deaths each in Narnur and Sirpur-U, 22 in Jainur, 20 in Utnoor and seven in Indravelli mandals.

The Action Taken Report of the Collector stated that 97 teams were involved in the first round of house-to-house rapid fever survey. The second round commenced on November 27. The teams distributed nutritious food, medicine for fever, iron folic acid for anaemia and chlorine tablets. Round-the-clock units were established at the district headquarters hospital, Adilabad and Utnoor Community Health Centre to treat patients.
