HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Sunday indicated that the Government would not give permission to new private medical and dental colleges unless they had good faculty.

Inaugurating the 115th general body meeting of the Dental Council of India here on Sunday, he said the Government had “resisted” giving permission to medical and dental colleges for the past three years due to shortage of faculty and would continue to adhere to the decision.

Pointless

Unless there was faculty improvement, there was no point in giving permission for more institutions.

Referring to the phenomenal increase in medical and dental colleges, he said the “onslaught” of private institutions was leaving the Government institutions in a “lurch” and it was becoming difficult to retain the faculty.

Dr. Reddy said 20 dental colleges were functioning in the State, including two in the private sector.

Another college in the private sector would be started this year at Kadapa.

Stating that imparting quality education was the need of the hour and not quantity, he hoped that the DCI would do its best to ensure that quality was maintained in all colleges and hospitals.

Government lauded

Anil Kohli, president of the council, lauded the Government for having agreed to implement increased salaries to dental college faculty.

He suggested to the Government to start a stem cell research centre and assured that the council would also get associated if it was initiated.

Governor’s plea

Later inaugurating an international symposium on “Research priorities in dental science and technology in Asia and Africa”, Governor N.D.Tiwari urged dentists to reach out to rural masses. They should conduct camps and create awareness among them on the ill-effects of smoking, tobacco and “paan” chewing.

Similarly in view of the increased construction activity in urban areas, he wanted dental camps to be organised in slums. He said researchers should look at ways to offer diagnosis and surgery at affordable prices.
