VITAL STRIKE: India’s Saba Anjum (second from left) is congratulated by teammates after scoring. NEW DELHI: Saba Anjum pulled off a 65th-minute equaliser to help India avoid embarrassment in front of a sizeable crowd in its opening match of the four-nation Shastri Cup women’s hockey tournament here on Saturday. Anjum’s goal tied the match score 1-1 after Malaysia struck in the fourth minute of the second half through Norbani Hashim. Despite the clear failure of the forwards to combine effectively, Chief Coach G.S. Bhangu took some comfort in the fact that the defence and the midfield organised themselves well to baulk the Malaysians for the best part of the match. The lone goal that Malaysia scored came off a sporadic raid on the Indian goal with Norbani getting deflection right following a free hit. The Indians had the larger share of possession, but the forwards looked clueless in producing the final pass. Malaysian Nadia Abdul Rahman was adjudged the ‘woman of the match.’ Other results: Azerbaijan 4 (Zarifahon Zeynalova, Liana Nuriyeva, Mi Kyong Aliyeva and Dilfuza Mirzaliyeva) bt Italy 2 (Carolina Scandroli, Daniela Possali).
