NEW DELHI: Riding on an extra knight, K. Sasikiran raised visions of a possible victory over Poland’s Bartlomiej Macieja before settling for a marathon 133–move draw in the second game of their third round encounter in the World Cup chess championship at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, on Saturday. Playing with white pieces, Sasikiran sacrificed a rook for a minor piece in the middle game. Soon, Macieja was forced to give back the rook for two minor pieces following an effective combination. However, Sasikiran could not prevent Macieja from picking up all the pawns. At this stage, Sasikiran had a rook and a knight against his rival’s rook and pawn. He collected the last pawn on the board on the 82nd move and then tried in vain for a win over the next 51 moves. Besides Sasikiran, those who will be seen in action in Sunday’s tiebreak games, include top-seed Vassily Ivanchuk, fourth seed Levon Aronian, Ukraine’s Sergey Karjakin, Russia’s Peter Svidler and Alexander Grischuk. Those who made the round of 16 were Ivan Cheparinov (Bul), Alexei Shirov (Esp), Michael Adams (Eng), Evgeny Alekseev (Rus), Magnus Carlsen (Nor), Gata Kamsky (USA), Vladimir Akopian (Arm), Dmitry Jakovenko (Rus), Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr) and Wang Yue (Chn).
