C. Sachin. KOTTAYAM: C. Sachin (Kannur) and A. Niji (Kozhikode) were the cynosure of all eyes as they bagged the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively in the under-19 chess competition of the 51st Kerala School Games at the Government Model HSS auditorium here on Saturday. In the boys’ section, Sachin, a 12th standard student of St. Michael’s HSS (Kannur) beat back the rest of the field by logging a total of 5.5 points out of a possible six. Mohammed Fawaz (Malappuram) was second with 4.5 points while Sanjith Latheef (Kozhikode), who also finished with 4.5 points, came third. It was his superior progress score of 16.5 compared to Latheef’s 15.5 which fetched Fawaz the second spot. There was a three-way tie in the girls’ section with Niji, second-placed R. Aparna (Kannur) and Rachana A.M. Nair (Thiruvananthapuram) finishing with an identical tally of 4 points out of a possible five. And here again, the final placings were determined on the basis of the progressive score as Niji, a 11th standard student of Savio HSS, Kozhikode, had a score of 14 points compared to Aparna’s 13 and Rachana’s 11. The final placings: Boys: 1. C. Sachin (Knr, 5.5 pts), 2. Mohammed Fawas (Mlpm, 4.5, 16.5), 3. Sanjith Latheef (Kzde, 4.5, 15.5). Girls: 1.A. Niji (Kzde, 4, 14), 2. R. Aparna (Knr, 4, 13), 3.
