BANGALORE: Bowring Institute, one of the oldest clubs in the City, will revive its badminton championship after nearly two decades and the State’s first five star tournament of the season will be conducted at the club courts here from December 3 to 7. Briefing the media here on Saturday, R. Vasanth Kumar , President, Bowring Institute, said, “we had a hoary past and conducted several State and National-level tournaments from 1960s to 1980s and we were the first to have wooden courts in the city. “Somehow down the years, badminton had lost much of its sheen in the club and we did not conduct any tournaments and we are all set to revive it and conduct the championship annually.” He also added that Bowring Institute will conduct a South Zone women’s tournament in February 2008. The State ranking tournament will carry an overall prize of Rs. 80,000. The events include sub-junior and junior singles and doubles for boys and girls. All leading juniors are expected to play in the tournament. R. Suresh Kumar will be the chief referee and matches in the preliminary phase would be played at both the KBA and Bowring courts. — Special Correspondent
