Four-nation hockey tournament

NEW DELHI: An international women’s hockey tournament is a rarity in India. The Lal Bahadur Shastri hockey tournament committee has come forward to organise one in Delhi. It is for the first time that a private body has taken the initiative to conduct a women’s tournament.

The four-nation Shastri Cup tournament, beginning at the Shivaji Stadium here on Saturday, will provide the Indian women’s team an opportunity to test out more than half a dozen new faces as it gears up for the Olympic qualifiers next year.

“We are confident of qualification," said Chief Coach G. S. Bhangu on Friday. The qualifier will come off in Kazan, Russia, in April.

India, ranked 13th in the world, has been clubbed with the US (11th), Netherlands Antilles (20th), Belgium (28th) and the host (21st), with France as the reserve team, for the qualifier that will take one team to Beijing.
