Raj Kumar clinches title

KARUR: B. Raj Kumar of Thanjavur, with 5.5 points out of a possible six, won the title at the State-level chess tournament for the visually challenged, conducted by the Ugam Trust, here.

Srirangam BHSS prevails

Srirangam Boys HSS defeated Alpha Plus Matriculation HSS by eight wickets and booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Tiruchi Educational District-level under-19 cricket tournament at Tiruchi on Friday.

The scores: Pre-quarterfinals: Alpha Plus MHSS 74 for three in 16 overs lost to Srirangam Boys HSS 78 for two in 10 overs (S.R. Mithun 47 not out). Mukulathur HSS 101 for four in 16 overs bt Campion AI HSS 95 in 16 overs.

Government HSS, Thuvarankurichi 120 for nine in 16 overs lost to National College HSS 122 for four in 15.4 overs.

Chinmaya 31 in 12 overs (Yogi four for 17) lost to Puthur Bishop Heber HSS 32 for one in 5 overs.

SBIOA, Amala triumph

Host SBIOA Matriculation School and Amala Girls HSS, Musiri, won the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively at the District-level inter-school handball tournament at Tiruchi.

The results: Final: Boys: SBIOA MS bt Arockia Matha MHSS 10-8.

Girls: Amala GHSS bt Rajaji Vidyalaya 9-1.

Orathanadu GBHSS wins

Orathanadu Government Boys HSS blanked Government HSS, Vadacheri 2-0 to win the title in the Orathanadu zonal football tournament, conducted by the Thanjavur unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, at Orathanadu. C. Kalaiarasan and R. Ramkumar were the scorers.

At Pattukottai, Government HSS, Karambaiyam, edged out Madhukur GBHSS 2-1 to emerge winner in the super-senior category at the Pattukottai zonal football tournament. GBHSS, Pattukottai, defeated Madhukur GBHSS 2-0 to clinch the title in the senior category.

Close contest

VLB Janakiammal Polytechnic College defeated Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic College (Vattamalaipalayam) 4-3 via tie-breaker in the Bishop Ambrose Trophy football tournament at the Christ the King Polytechnic College in Coimbatore on Friday.

The results: Swami Sivananda HSS bt GHSS (Ramanathapuram) 5-0; VLB Janakiammal PC bt Sri Ramakrishna PC (Vattamalaipalayam) 4-3 (via tie-breaker), Government PC bt Sankara PC 3-0, Mani HSS bt Kendriya Vidyalaya 4-1.
