Churchill Brothers swamps Mahindras

KEEN TUSSLE: Churchill Brothers’ Mboyo Iyomi, who netted two goals, being checked by Mahindra United’s Manad Das.

MUMBAI: Churchill Brothers ripped open Mahindra United’s defence for a 5-1 win in an away game of the ONGC Cup I-League at the Cooperage.

Mboyo Iyomi, named ‘best player’, who scored twice, dominated the strike zone for the Goan club with skipper Odafe Okolie.

The Mumbai team, flattened in the first half 0-4, attempted to come back after a change of ends but was far too behind to catch up.

Churchill Brothers coach Karim Becherifa expressed surprise at the victory margin, though delighted with the players’ fitness level and ability to stick to a plan.

Iyomi’s double strike was special. Mahindra United defence was caught unawares as Iyomi leapt and nodded in a pass from Khenthang Paite, past a diving goalkeeper in the 13th minute.

Paite increased the lead later with a booming half-volley. Soon after Odafe scored with a low, searing shot after using time and space on the left to get into striking position.

The fifth and final goal saw Iyomi’s opportunism. Darting ahead and across he received the ball rolling in off a free-kick at the right post and netted with a flick on the run.

Yusif Yakubu pulled one back for the home team with a direct free-kick conversion.
