Mathew wins

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mathew Mulavelil Thomas of Kerala won the singles title in the over-65 category of the AITA National veterans’ tennis tournament at the TTC courts on Thursday.

In the final, Mathew crushed T.N. Laxmanan (TN) 6-1, 6-2. The final of the over 45 category will be an all-Kerala affair with M.R.Ramesh taking on K. Vijaykumar in the title round.

However, Ramesh and K. Vijaykumar took contrasting routes to the final. Ramesh breezed past Paul Manohar (AP) 6-1, 6-4 while K. Vijaykumar (Ker) was made to work hard by S. Settu (TN) before winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

Aleem (TN) will meet S.Rajasekharan Nair (Ker) in the final in the men’s over 55 category.

The results:

Over-45 (semifinals): M.R. Ramesh (Ker) bt Paul Manohar (AP) 6-1, 6-4; K. Vijayakumar (Ker) bt S. Settu (TN) 6-2, 3-6, 6-4

Over-55 (semifinals): Aleem (TN) bt A. Kaimal (TN) 6-2, 6-4; S. Rajasekharan Nair (Ker) bt Jacob Kallivayalil (Ker) 6-4, 6-3

Over 65 (final): Mathew Mulavelil Thomas (KER) bt T.N. Laxmanan (TN) 6-1, 6-2.
