Kerala art festival in the Gulf

Dubai: A four-day festival of Kerala art forms, Utsavam 2007, opened here on Thursday as part of the celebrations to mark 60 years of India’s Independence.

The festival showcases traditional art forms of Kerala such as Kathakali, Thayambaka, Keli, and Mohiniyattom, Venu Rajamony, India’s Consul-General in Dubai, told reporters.

Consulate support

The festival, organised by Thiranottam, a Dubai-based group promoting Kerala’s art forms, with the consulate’s support, is being held in Dubai, Ra Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi.

Muhammed Al Murr, chairman of the Dubai Cultural Council at the Consulate General of India, inaugurated the event.

“These events showcase India’s rich cultural heritage, vibrant and plural society as well as its rapid growth in economic strength and technological capabilities,” Mr. Rajamony said.

The celebrations were kicked off on August 16 with a ‘Tiranga,’ a multi-media musical presentation on the national flag of India featuring Pandit Jasraj, Hair Prasad Chouresia, Javed Akhtar and Mandolin Srinivas.
