Ivana Furtado retains title

Antalya: Ivana Furtado did India proud by retaining the World under-8 girls’ title at the end of the eleventh and final round of the World Youth chess championships on Wednesday.

Apart from Ivana, Prince Bajaj and Shalmali Gagare won bronze medals in the boys’ under-10 and under-14 girls’ championships.

Ivana had the better of Zhansaya Abdumalik of Kazakhstan and won two pawns and a rook for a knight.

The Kazakh girl repeatedly asked for a draw. Ivana agreed to a draw in a totally won position.
