KOLKATA: Pakistan pace ace Shoaib Akhtar was discharged from a city hospital on Wednesday after spending more than 24 hours on the sickbed. Akhtar, who was diagnosed with a chest infection, was released as his “condition had improved considerably”, according to doctors treating him. The Pakistan spearhead, who was put on antibiotics and intravenous fluids, returned to his hotel, bringing relief to a team beleaguered by sickness and injuries. Improvement“He has responded to medicines and has improved a lot,” said Dr. Shyamasis Bandopadhyay, who was overseeing Akhtar’s treatment. “We have prescribed some medicines and his condition will be re-assessed tomorrow (Thursday). It is then upon the Pakistan management to decide on whether to play him or not,” the doctor added. Three-layered securityMeanwhile, the Kolkata police, in an unprecedented security arrangement, has for the first time decided to have three layers of security screening for all those coming to watch the match. Disclosing this, the Commissioner of Police, Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti, said modern gadgets would be used to screen the spectators. More than 5,000 police personnel would also be deployed in and around Eden Gardens.
