HYDERABAD: Facilitating operational planning in a fully ‘net-enabled environment’ and transforming itself into a ‘knowledge centric entity’ have been emphasised as the medium and long-term goals of College of Defence Management at a media interaction session here. In a curtain raising presentation for the annual seminar to be conducted on Thursday Captain Sanjeev Kumar Nayyar, a trainer of the CDM, said the premier Tri-services institution was established as the Institute of Defence Management in 1970. It was renamed College of Defence Management in 1985 with recognition from All India Management Association. Since then, the College has been striving towards its vision of optimising the effectiveness of the Armed Forces by developing enlightened leadership, efficient resource management and effective decision making ability, Capt. Nayyar said. He said that over 6,000 officers had so far been trained in CDM on various programmes such as Senior Defence Management Course, Higher Defence Management Course (recognised by Osmania University as Masters in Management Studies), and theme based Management Development Programme. Also on offer is Defence Management Course for personnel from ‘Friendly’ Foreign countries. Over 120 foreign students, from countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Srilanka, have been trained so far. “Every year, about 350 officers are handpicked after rigorous selection procedure, for being trained in the college. An experience of 22-plus years in Defence Services is mandatory for selection,” Nayyar said. With widening recognition from civil and academic institutions, the faculty from the College would be invited by prestigious institutions . The annual seminar to be hosted by the college on November 29 and 30 will discuss the ‘Strategic Transformation Initiatives for Realising Joint Capabilities’. Minister of State for Defence M.M.Pallam Raju will be the chief guest and about 200 delegates from retired and serving armed forces personnel are expected to attend. Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, Air Chief Marshall S.P.Tyagi and former Chief of Air Staff Lt Gen H.S.Lidder are the prominent among them. 63 papers will be presented in the seminar, of which 10 will be published.
