Three activists tonsure their head Educational institutions observe bandh VISAKHAPATNAM: The third day of the relay hunger strike by the SFI demanding better facilities at welfare hostels on Wednesday was marked by tonsuring their head by three students in protest against the continued apathy of the Government towards poor conditions in welfare hostels and students problems. Ex gratia soughtThe SFI also organised a bandh of educational institutions demanding the Government to sanction an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs to the parents of K. Bhagyavathi, a student staying in the Tribal Welfare Hostel here who died due to diarrhoea, job for her father in Tourism Department and better facilities in hostels and provision of sufficient hostel accommodation.It was also decided to launch relay hunger strike in front of the ITDA office at Paderu from Thursday, president of district committee of SFI B. Jagan.Leaders of Mala Mahanadu M. Chinna Rao, District Scheduled Castes Welfare Association G. Raju, State Dalit Morcha U. Appa Rao, APCLC district president T. Sreerama Murthy, fishermen association leader Krishna and others visited the hunger strike camp and expressed their support and solidarity to the striking students. TDP flays MinistersAt a press conference, president of Telugu Desam’s district unit and former Minister Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy criticised Ministers Konathala Ramakrishna and Anam Rama Narayana Reddy for not calling on parents of Bhagyavathi and instead going on a “pleasure” tour in Araku Valley to inaugurate tourism projects a few days ago.It was regrettable that not even the MLA of the area K. Ravi Babu or a senior officer had visited the village to console Bhagyavathi’s parents. The TDP on its part handed over Rs. 10,000 to Bhagyavathi’s father who did not go to work for the last 10 days. Dig at ZP chiefMr. Satyanarayana Murthy criticised Chairman of Zilla Praja Parishad Gorle Ramamurthy Naidu for bluntly rejecting a proposal made by a TDP ZPTC during the Standing Committee on Tuesday to discuss Bhagyavathi’s death and the poor conditions in tribal welfare hostels.
