VUDA accused of submitting false report Sarma terms it illegal and against public interest VISAKHAPATNAM: MLC from North Andhra Graduates’ Constituency and Deputy Floor Leader of Progressive Democratic Front M.V.S. Sarma wants annulment of a G.O. giving back 556 square yards of land acquired for Dr. V.S. Krishna Government College. The land had been acquired in 1979 and on a request by the heirs of the original owner that they would pay back the compensation amount the land was sought to be re-conveyed. Mr. Sarma told reporters here on Wednesday that the college management had not given its consent for giving back the land as it was required for construction of a women’s hostel with Rs. 25 lakhs of UGC funds. Besides, the college principal was not the competent authority to give consent for re-conveyance of land. The MLC charged the VUDA with submitting a false report stating that the college authorities had given consent for re-conveyance. He wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary to the effect. Terming it as illegal and against public interest as 6,000 students were studying in the college which is the only co-education government college in the GVMC area, he wanted to know whether land could be found for the college once the present stretch was given away. The land said to be worth Rs. 2 crores was proposed to be given for 2.65 lakhs, being the compensation amount returned with interest. Mr. Sarma said the Minister from the district Konathala Ramakrishna stated that Cabinet decision was required for such a decision and Municipal Administration Minister Koneru Ranga Rao had expressed surprise over the approval. Probe soughtTo a question by the MLC on whether the competent authority had agreed for giving the land back, the VUDA stated that the college authorities gave consent. Taking exception to land acquired for public purpose being given back, the MLC wondered whether land acquired for the steel plant and not being utilised would be given back. Mr. Sarma wanted an inquiry to be conducted into the affair to facilitate action against those responsible. He said pressure would be brought on authorities by joining hands with students, corporators and others to get the land back.
