Karnataka wins a thrilling contest

MUMBAI: Karnataka men won a thrilling tie against Maharashtra 91-83 for the first win in two matches in the 3rd United Phosphorous Savio Cup all India basketball tournament, at Don Bosco School, Matunga.

Karnataka having lost to National champion Services in the opener, dominated the third quarter, leading 71-52 before the host fought back in the fourth quarter, setting up a tight finish on Monday night.

Tinu (23), Uma Sankar (17) and Nixon (15) contributed for Karnataka. Suraj Shetty (14), Surabh Nisar, Mahesh Nagane (13 each) and Sanjay Salunkhe (12) shone for Maharashtra. This was the second loss for Maharashtra.

Kerala had won 81-56 against the home team earlier.

The results: Men: Karnataka 91 (Tinu 23, Uma Sankar 17, Nixon 15, Sanjay Raj 9) bt Maharashtra (Suraj Shetty 14, Surabh Nisar 13, Mahesh Nagane 13, Sanjay Salunkhe 12). HT: 43-37.

Kerala 81 (Sadat Kharadi 20) bt Maharashtra 56 (Bobit Mathew 19, Manoj Abraham 12). HT: 51-31.
