‘Give equal chances to women with disabilities’

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: Organisations working for the disabled in the city are gearing up for celebrating World Disability Day on December 3.

The District Disabled Rehabilitation Office will conduct cultural programmes for all students studying in special schools, J. Jesuraj, District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, said here on Tuesday. The objective of celebrating the day was to make the public and people with disabilities aware of educational and employment opportunities available to them, he said.

Deaf Leaders, a non-Governmental organisation (NGO) working for empowerment of people with hearing impairment, will distribute hearing aids, artificial limbs and eye glasses to people with disabilities on December 2 at the Rotary Texcity Hall. Hearing impaired people will be provided with facilities for self employment, K. Murali, Director of Deaf Leaders, said. A network for providing employment to the disabled, Udis Forum, plans to collaborate with other non-Governmental organisations and start programmes in connection with World Disability Day.

“This year is very important for those working in the disability field as our country has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” M.N.G.Mani, President of Udis Forum, said. Udis Forum was planning to launch a website, “Disability Alliance of Voluntary Organisations,” by the end of December. The UN had chosen “Decent work for persons with disabilities” as the theme for this year’s Disability Day celebrations.
