Over 2,400 receive free television sets

Before December-end this year, over 1,60, 900 will get TVs
In 2008, the authorities plan to distribute 2,14,500 TV sets

Coimbatore: The next phase of the distribution of free colour television sets and gas stoves to the poor and needy commenced at Chinnavedampatti town panchayat in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

The Minister for Rural Industries, Pongalur N. Palanisamy, and the Collector, Neeraj Mittal, the District Revenue Officer, S. Prabhakaran, and the Revenue Divisional Officer, Coimbatore, M.A. Subramanian took part in the function organised in this connection.

The distribution of the same to beneficiaries in various other villages across the district also commenced simultaneously.

The officials said that in the first phase 772 beneficiaries were given TV sets at Samathuvapuram. Under the second phase of the scheme wherein it was planned to provide 10,000 TV sets an Assembly constituency a total of 1,39,592 were distributed so far. Before December 2007 end, the authorities plan to complete distribution of 1,60,988 sets. In the next phase during the beginning of the year 2008, the authorities have planned to distribute 2,14,500 TV sets. On Tuesday at Chinnavedampatti, the authorities commenced the distribution of TVs to 2,454 beneficiaries while 9,847 beneficiaries would get it across the district under the current phase. Similarly, the authorities planned to distribute 8,672 free gas stoves and LPG connection.
