Drive against rowdy elements continues

The police have turned their focus on gangs involved in ‘katta panchayat’ in civil disputes


Coimbatore: The police in West Zone and Coimbatore City have stepped up their drive against anti-social and rowdy elements to ensure maintenance of law and order. In the city, the police strengthened the security arrangements in the wake of the anniversary of the murder of traffic constable R. Selvaraj by fundamentalist outfits on November 29 and the anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6.

The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, had ordered for a crackdown on history sheeters, rowdy elements and notorious convicts in the adverse notice of the police in the seven districts in West Zone namely Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem Rural District, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore Rural district and the Nilgiris besides Salem City. In the last 48-hour, the police have so far rounded up 458 habitual offenders, ex-convicts, notorious criminals, history sheeters, known depredators and anti-social elements.

Storming operation

According to reports reaching here, the police in Salem City have rounded 62, Coimbatore Rural District 44, Erode 54, Salem District 77, Namakkal 118, Dharmapuri 78, Krishnagiri 25.

In the city, the police conducted a storming operation on Monday night by conducting vehicle checks and lodge checks across. The drives were conducted across the city simultaneously by different teams led by Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Sugumar (Law and Order), P. Nagarajan (Crime) and S. Manoharan (Traffic).

The storming operation involved checks in 79 lodges/hotels and 33 mansions where the bonafides and credentials of the inmates were verified.

During the drive 401 cases were booked for violation of road rules, 208 suspects were rounded up and 59 ex-convicts have been taken into custody. The various intelligence wings of the police have turned their focus on gangs that were turning law unto themselves using political connections and nexus for indulging in illegal arbitrations “katta panchayat” in civil disputes and monetary disputes. A station-wise, sub-division wise and district-wise list of gangs, gangsters and their political connections were also under preparation, sources in the intelligence wings said on conditions of anonymity.
