New patrol boat launched for port

Rs.7-crore dredger to be procured

NAGAPATTINAM: A Rs. 68-lakh fibreglass high-speed boat, purchased with Asian Development Bank assistance, was launched here on Tuesday.

Minister for Highways and Ports M. P. Saminathan and Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan flagged off the boat for patrolling the port region.

Mr. Saminathan said that the boat could be used to trace missing fishermen. Development works were being taken up under Asian Development Bank and Tsunami Emergency Assistance Project in three phases.

The first phase was nearing completion. Rehabilitation of north and south breakwater by strengthening natural stones and repair of damaged concrete road and stacking area and damaged wharf and cargo handling area were in full swing.

Reconstruction of tsunami-damaged weighbridge and illumination facilities within the port had been completed, he said.

The second phase of works including extension of north and south breakwater by 200 metres each (Rs.6.47 crore), providing a diaphragm wall for 650 metres on the eastern bank of the Kaduvaiyar at Nagapattinam Port to prevent erosion of eastern river bank (Rs.8.63 crore), and dredging of a 1,575-metre stretch in the Karudaiyar for a depth of four metres near the port (Rs.5.92 crore) was being taken up.

He said that that a Rs.7-crore dredger and marine survey instrument worth Rs. 1 crore would be procured for the port.

Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Chief Executive Officer of Tamil Nadu Maritime Board P. R. Sampath, A.K.S.Vijayan, MP, and V.Marimuthu, MLA accompanied the Minister during his inspection.

The Minister, who also inspected the tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction development works at a cost of Rs.45.80 crore, instructed the officials to complete the work before June next.
