Call for workshops in arts

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The former MLC and Kannada writer L. Hanumanthiah has urged the Government to conduct workshops and competitions in various forms of art such as music, drama and painting, on a regular basis, for the overall development of school drop-outs and poor children. Dr. Hanumanthiah was speaking after inaugurating the two-day annual Kalapratibhotsava of Bangalore Rural and Ramnagar districts, organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture here on Monday.

He called upon parents to encourage children in inculcating arts, crafts and music as they are equally important as science in maintaining a healthy and positive social order, and containing personal and professional stress factors.

He said that unfortunately, many parents force their children to concentrate only on their studies without realising the importance of arts, sports and music in the development of the mind and society. In the light of increasing aspirations for lucrative jobs in the IT sector, parents were pushing themselves and their children hard towards the “software destination”. In this way they were ignoring their health and the finer things in life. Such parents and suffering professionals should realise what wonders books, plays and music could do in changing their outlook on life, Dr. Hanumanthiah emphasised.

Welcoming the gathering, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Thyagaraj said that the purpose of holding Kalapratibhotsava was to tap the talents in three categories: Bala pratibhe, Kishora pratibhe and Yuva pratibhe. Over 300 children from the two districts had been participating in various competitions .
