Sunil Kumar sets two new records

Madurai: N. Sunil Kumar of Tiruvallur set two new State records in the Hercules Rajaram centenary birthday 47th Tamil State inter-District men’s weightlifting championship and 12th women’s championship, organised by MDWA, at Madurai on Sunday.

Sunil Kumar bettered the old record of Sudalimuthu’s of 110kg in 62kg category snatch with a lift of 120kg and he totalled 261kg to better the old record of total 255kg, standing in the name of Sudalaimuthu.

Tiruvallur won the men’s team championship with a total of 223 points and Pudukottai the women’s team championship with a total of 106 points.

G. Anbarasu of Tiruvallur was adjusted as the outstanding lifter.

Chennai triumphs

TNEB, Chennai lifted the TNEB Trophy after defeating Port Trust, Tuticorin 74-58 in the final of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Golden Jubilee State-level basketball tournament at Tuticorin on Sunday.

The results: Final: TNEB 74 (Sivakumar 36, Vincent 18) bt Port Trust, Tuticorin 58 (Rathanaraj 18, Selvakumar 13). Third place: TBA Club, Tuticorin 84 (Mariselvam 24, Jeyaseelan 20) bt TN Police 66 (Rajkumar 26, Sekar 11).

Salem wins thriller

At Erode, Salem posted a thrilling 46-45 win over Virudhunagar to enter the quarterfinal in the girls’ section in the second SAI-promotion State level inter-school basketball tournament organised by the Erode wing of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu at the BVB courts in Thindal on Monday.

The winner in both the boys’ and girls’ section will take part in the schools nationals to be held at Orissa from January 5 to 8 next.

Volleyball tournament

The K. Venkatesalu Memorial volleyball tournament for girls organised by the Suguna RIP V MHSS will be held at its premises in Coimbatore on November 28 and 29.
