Schuettler starts as favourite

Principal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Fresh from his Malaysian Open win at the Challenger Series event in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Rainer Schuettler of Germany will start as the favourite regardless of the seedings at the ONGC $50,000 ATP Challenger tennis here.

Schuettler, the former top 10 player, is on his comeback trail after falling on the ATP ranking list. The German has been seeded fifth, but Sunday’s win in Kuala Lumpur, when he beat Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, after having got better of the world No. 56 Florian Mayer in the quarterfinals, will help boost his confidence. Schuettler will open on Tuesday.

Rohan Bopanna will be here in the bottom half of the draw. With ATP points acting as a bait, Bopanna has decided to skip the $100,000 Asian Tennis Federation’s Masters event in Bangkok, which offers no points except prize money. Bopanna will be aiming to gain as many points, though he has been handed a tough draw with second seeded Igor Kunitsyn of Russia as his first round opponent.

Besides Bopanna, Karan Rastogi is the other Indian direct entry in the main draw. Davis Cupper Harsh Mankad is among the three Indians who were awarded wild cards along with Prajnesh Guneshwaran and Navdeep Singh.

The seedings: 1. Ivo Minar (Cze), 2. Igor Kunitsyn (Rus), 3. Kristian Pless (Den), 4. Rik De Voest (RSA), 5. Rainer Schuettler (Ger), 6. Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi (Pak), 7. Wesley Moodie (RSA), 8. Adrian Cruciat (Rou).

The results: Qualifying: Tushar Liberhan bt Frank Moser (Ger) 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; Dmitry Vlasov (Rus) bt Xin-Yuan Yu (Chn) 6-1, 6-2; Sunil Kumar Sipaeya bt Purav Raja 7-6(4), 6-2; Guillaume Couillard (Mon) bt Rohan Gajjar 6-2, 7-6(5).
