Nuvem (Goa): Ameya Walvalkar of Team Mohite Racing registered his fifth win from as many starts in the Indian National Karting championship here on Sunday. With his victory in two races in the seniors section, Walvalkar has shut out any chance of drivers from his rival team Speed Rayo Racing clinching the overall title. Ameya had 166 points going into the final event at Kolhapur and only his teammate Adumber Hede has a slim chance of challenging Ameya for the overall championship. The Mumbai-based karting champion started this season badly with a poor show at Kochi. However, he showed his mettle in the rounds at Coimbatore and Kolhapur to build up a sizeable lead. The Goa round was crucial as Rayomand Banajee of Rayo Racing had all the chances of bridging the gap. In the first senior final race, Ameya started out from second place on the grid. His superior driving skills ensured that he overtook Abbas Ghadially in the 32-lap race and went on to win by almost two seconds. The second senior race had a dramatic start. As the 14 drivers went into the first corner, Ameya Walvalkar tried to slow the pace and was bumped by Abbas Ghadially. Four karts ended up crashing in the first corner and team Rayo’s chances were effectively quashed. After that it was plain sailing for Ameya and he went on to lap both Abbas Ghadially and Rayomand Banajee. There was more action as Adumber Hede climbed steadily into second position and staved off a challenge from Samayk Shah. Abha Mankar from Pune won the ladies class. — Special Correspondent
