V.R.V. gives Punjab the lead

CHANDIGARH: V.R.V. Singh, with a seven-wicket haul, halted Uttar Pradesh’s progress in the nick of time and ensured Punjab got the first innings lead on the third day of the Ranji Super League match here on Sunday.

U.P., which was 352 for seven overnight, could add only 23 runs to fall short of Punjab’s total by six runs. In the second essay, Punjab had made 238 for seven with Ravneet Ricky unbeaten on 76.

At Dharmshala, Maharashtra completed a 10-wicket win (on Saturday it was H.P. which was on 41 for two at stumps and not as published) over Himachal Pradesh. The host after failing in the first innings made 247 in the second knock, to leave Maharashtra just 21 runs for a win. Maharashtra reached that in the fifth over. S.M. Fallah was Maharashtra’s hero taking six wickets for 49 runs.

In Mumbai, Sahil Kukreja’s fine show of patience and off-side stroke play (199, 380m, 272b, 25 x 4s, 1 x 6) helped the host put a stiff fourth innings target of 387 for Delhi in the Group ‘A’ tie at the Wankhede Stadium. Showing no signs of wilting under pressure, Delhi’s opening pair Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir whittled down the target by 59 runs

At Jaipur, Saurashtra was strongly placed, thanks to C.J. Pujara who was unbeaten on 151 as his team reached 253 for three in the second innings after gaining a handsome 135 run first innings lead against Rajasthan.

In the Plate league, Gujarat chalked out an innings and 193-run win over Services in New Delhi.
