In the first phase tree saplings will be planted MADURAI: In an attempt to improve the status of primary health care centres and Government hospitals in taluk headquarters, the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) has introduced a new scheme ‘Arasamaramum Arasu Aaspathiriyum’ (Pipal tree and Government hospital), according to District Coordinating Officer P. Palanikumar here on Saturday. Talking to The Hindu, he said that in the first phase of the programme, tree saplings would be planted in primary healthcare centres (PHC) and subsequently in the Government hospitals. The Government was keen to make the hospital not only patient-friendly, but also environment-friendly. Through the project, all PHCs would get a facelift. They were being renovated and painted with bright colours while efforts were on to construct compound walls for the GHs, he said. Checking encroachmentAs a temporary measure to prevent encroachment of hospital lands, ‘mergeria’ saplings had been planted as a fence, he said. Planting of saplings was completed at the PHCs in Rajakoor and Viradhanoor. In the second phase, as part of their extension activity, students of Lady Doak College and American College were involved in planting of tree saplings in Melur and Vadipatti Government hospitals, Dr. Palanikumar said.
