KOCHI: Media should become the catalyst for social change, K. Radhakrishnan, Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly has said. Inaugurating ‘learn@newsroom,’ the continuing journalism education programme organised by the Ernakulam Press Club, here on Sunday, Mr. Radhakrishnan said that the media should be guided by a sense of social responsibility. It should also strive to ensure social justice to all sections of the society, the Speaker said. A tendency to create unnecessary controversies has emerged in Kerala over the years, which is a deviation from the earlier practice of indulging in gainful dialogue on issues that affected the society. Such debates also succeeded in creating social changes. However, the controversies generated in the present day society are short-lived, he pointed out. Mr. Radhakrishnan said that a media culture which was committed to social justice and delivering its role with social responsibility was still relevant in the Kerala Society. Televised proceedingsIn his address, K.V. Thomas, MLA, suggested that all the proceedings of the State Assembly should be televised so that the people would get a chance to evaluate the performance of their respective representatives in the Assembly. The performance of legislators in the Assembly has improved since some of the proceedings of the house began being televised, Mr. Thomas said.
