REIGNING SUPREME: State Bank of Travancore lived up to its favourite tag in the final. KOCHI: State Bank of Travancore won the 57th Cordiant-Pooja all-India cricket tournament with a lot to spare at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Sunday. SBT defeated Muthoot-Ernakulam CC by 32 runs. In fine formThe 23-year-old, in fine nick in this tournament, hit 87 runs (114 balls, 8x4) and later picked up two wickets. The seasoned V. Suresh (63 off 63 balls, 4x6, 3x4) and Kevin Oscar (three for 41) also had a big hand in the triumph, just SBT’s second in an event which has the reputation of being one of the world’s oldest limited-over tournaments. Krishna, who hit an unbeaten 97 on Saturday, was named as the man of the tournament and of the final. And in Muthoot’s chase, there were a couple of good stands, 81 for the second wicket between M. Pradeep and G.P. Unnikrishnan and 76 for the eighth between N.V. Valeed and Mazhar Moidu but they were not enough. Dennis Paul, the CEO of Cordiant Technologies, gave away the prizes. The scores: SBT 269 for six in 45 overs (V. Suresh 63, Krishna Chandran 87) bt Muthoot-Ernakulam CC 237 in 42.2 overs (M. Pradeep 48, Mazhar Moidu 46 n.o., G.P.Unnikrishnan 44, N.V. Valeed 43). Best player prizes: M. Pradeep (Muthoot-ECC, batsman), Anandakuttan (Muthoot-ECC, bowler), M.S. Akhil (Cordiant-Tripunithura CC, fielder), Krishna Chandran (SBT, man of the final & man of the tournament), Salmon (Century, most promising youngster). Pravin hits centuryThe promising Pravin Achuthan hit a fine century as St. Thomas College, Thrissur, thrashed defending champion St Joseph’s (Devagiri) by 101 runs and entered the final of the Calicut University inter-zone cricket championship at the Palakkad Fort Ground here on Sunday.
The scores (semifinals): St. Thomas, Thrissur, 265 for eight in 40 overs (Pravin Achuthan 118, Jibson 55) bt St. Joseph’s, Devagiri, 164 for seven in 40 overs (Jaseen 56, Fahad Ali 42). Sree Kerala Varma, Thrissur, 245 for five in 40 overs (Subin 61, Shaheen 48) bt Farook College, Feroke 120 in 34.5 overs (Pranob 30, Vysakh Chandran three for 33).
