Sports policy: conference stresses on infrastructure development

Bangalore: The conference on Karnataka sports policy held at the State Youth Centre here on Saturday stressed on developing infrastructure, nurturing talent and timely recognition of medal winners as key ingredients for promoting sport in the State.

The conference, attended by leading sportspersons, administrators and coaches, is part of the initiative taken by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) to develop a State legislation that promotes sport. “Sports for all and excellence in sports,” will be the guiding preamble of the proposed policy and it has also been planned to establish a ‘Sports and Exercise Medicine’ centre at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium complex here before 2009.

The conference stressed that cash incentives to medal winners — both at the international and National levels — should be disbursed immediately and only a nominal delay of 30 days would be feasible.

It also reiterated that physically challenged athletes should be given due recognition and should be treated on par with other athletes while giving incentives.

Aman is skipper

Aman Raj will lead Karnataka in the Polly Umrigar Trophy All India knock-out under-15 tournament at Pune from December 1 to 18.

MEG lifts title

Madras Engineering Group (MEG) lifted the Sri Chowdeshwari Trophy on better set score quotient even though it lost to Karnataka State Police (KSP) in the four-team super league of the State Association Cup volleyball tournament, which concluded at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore Saturday.

KSP, needing a 3-0 scoreline, only managed a 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21 win in 75 minutes.

Hemanth and Sanoj played a stellar role for the State Cops, who have repeatedly defeated the Sappers in the last two seasons. For the second day running, ITI produced an exemplary performance beating CIL 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 to finish third.

KVG (Sullia) entered the final of the P.C. Zahir Memorial Football tournament beating Alva’s Nursing College (Moodbidri) 2-0 in the semifinals at Mangalore on Saturday.

Jiji and Vipin scored the match winner in the 47th and 61st minute of the second half. The final will be played on Monday where KVG will take on P.A. College of Engineering, which got the better of Kasturba Medical College 1-0 in the first semifinal on Friday.
