THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Thursday called upon District Collectors to avoid delays in processing files relating to welfare and development programmes. Addressing an annual meeting of Collectors here, the Chief Minister said even funds sanctioned from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund reached the beneficiaries only after three or four months. Reports that were sought urgently on complaints and other issues were delayed. Mr. Achuthanandan said modern technology should be used to speed up services. Attention needs to be paid to see that benefits of pension and rehabilitation programmes and special assistance to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes reached the people on time. Land acquisition for projects should not be hindered. He said more action and support were needed to revive agriculture in the State. The Centre should change its attitude in this respect. He asked the Collectors to take the lead in realising revenue arrears and in mobilising small savings deposits. All illegal activities that harmed the environment should be prevented. Activities of anti-social elements in land and black money transactions should be checked. He also called for initiatives on the part of the Collectors in preventing adulteration and hoarding of goods and in keeping the State clean.
