CHANDIGARH: An unbeaten 151 by Uday Kaul enabled Punjab to get out of trouble and reach a position of strength against Uttar Pradesh on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Super League match here on Friday. At stumps, Punjab was 324 for seven with an unfinished eighth-wicket stand between Kaul and Charanjit Singh (29) promising to add more substance to the side’s total. Punjab was 17 for three at one stage before the revival took place. Kaul and Pankaj Dharmani (46) put on 86 for the fourth wicket. Thereafter, Ravi Inder (45) added 121 for the fifth with Kaul. Medium-pacer Praveen Kumar (four for 60) troubled Punjab initially after U.P. sent the host in. Abhinav’s distinctionIn Chennai, Abhinav Mukund’s classy 108 on Ranji Trophy debut took Tamil Nadu to 289 for five in 90 overs against Karnataka. Skipper S. Badrinath was unbeaten on 93. The 17-year-old Abhinav, who became the seventh Tamil Nadu batsman to score a century on Ranji debut, displayed rare maturity.
