Award for Chief Justice of England

New Delhi: Chief Justice of England and Wales Lord Phillip of Worth Matravers will receive the International Council of Jurists 2007 award from President Pratibha Patil on Saturday. Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan will preside over the function.

The ICJ said Lord Phillip has been chosen for his lifetime contribution to the cause of justice. As a judge, administrator, trainer and guide, he made exemplary and far-reaching contributions to the theory and practice of law for advancement of justice.

Other winners of the ICJ award are: Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj for being instrumental in catalysing socio-legal reforms on a par with global standards; International Bar Association president Fernando Pmbo for his selfless dedication to affairs of the legal fraternity throughout the world and President of the International Court of Justice Justice Rosalyn Higgins for her contribution to the development and recognition of international law as a tool to regulate conduct of nations and its application to settle international disputes.

The ICJ also announced the Law Day awards, 2007: The awardees are: The former Chief Justice of India, A.S. Anand, for his outstanding contribution to fair and efficient administration of justice during his distinguished judicial tenure; Bar Council of India Chairman Gopakumaran Nair for his unique contribution to legal education and leadership in legal profession in India; Additional Solicitor General, P.P. Malhotra for his efforts in advancement of the science of jurisprudence; Advocate General of Punjab H.S. Mattewal for his erudition and experience in constitutional law; ICJ organising secretary S. Prabhakaran for his outstanding contribution to the study and practice of criminal law and as fearless advocate of prisoners’ human rights and the cause of lawyers and legal profession; Diljeet Titus for corporate law; Lalit Bhasin for his contribution to development of the Bar; Yatin Oza for civil law and Vice Chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth University Shivaji Rao Kadam for maintaining highest standards in legal education.
