changanassery: The Nair Service Society (NSS) and various Churches have decided to join hands against the government’s education policy which, they said, could have far-reaching negative social implications. The leaders of various Churches and the NSS met at the NSS headquarters at Perunna on Thursday to discuss issues facing the State’s aided education sector. NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker; assistant secretary G. Sukumaran Nair; treasurer P.N. Narendranathan Nair; Major Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram Baselios Cleemis Catholicos; Archbishop Mar Joseph Perunthottom; Paulose Mar Pachomios, Metropolitan; Bishop Stanley Roman; Thomas Mar Themotheos, Metropolitan; Bishop Thomas Samuel; Archbishop Mathew Moolekattil; Kuriakose Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan; K.M. Mammen; and Philip Njarelakkatt were the religious leaders who attended the meeting. ‘Usurping power’The meeting alleged that the government’s move to “usurp” the powers of aided school managements in the appointment of staff and teachers in the name of revising the Kerala Education Rules (KER) was unjust. The meet said the move to hand over the administration of the general education sector, including aided schools, to local bodies was politically motivated. A joint statement issued by the socio-religious leaders said the “government should not forget the fact that religious and social organisations had taken it as their responsibility to set up schools and other educational institutions in different parts of the State as it found that the government alone was unable to meet the State’s educational requirements.”
