Vanitha rewrites her hammer record

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: The curtains came down on the 23rd edition of the State junior athletics championship, sponsored by Niveditha Constructions, with a lone record on the final day.

Vanitha Rathod of Dharwad flung the hammer in the girls’ under-18 category to a distance of 42.89 metres to rewrite her own year-old mark of 39.03.

Records notwithstanding, there were inspiring performances from the Dakshina Kannada athletes Nischith J. Shetty in the 200m, M.R. Manju, younger brother of international M.R. Poovamma, in the boys’ under-18 400m hurdles and the sprightly Rebecca Jose in the girls’ under-16.

Rebecca, Manju sizzle

Rebecca, who comfortably won the semifinals in a time of 12.64s, breezed through the field in 12.4 in the final. Manju ran superbly in the 400m hurdles to dip home in a time of 56.01 seconds.

The 3,000m steeplechase was gone through without the water jump and the hurdles. The official statement said: “We have been instructed to take the timings for the distance as a regular event as it had some prominent athletes.”

There have been a lot of discrepancies with regard to the team selection for the Junior Nationals at Vijayawada.

Many athletes, who did not participate in the State event here, are part of the contingent on the basis of their performances in the South Zone meet held earlier. Some coaches did raise the issue but to no avail.
