BANGALORE: As the Indian hockey camp for the Olympic qualifiers picked up steam at the SAI (South) Centre in Kengeri near here, the chief coach, Joaquim Carvalho promised to “have a close look” at “exceptional performers” in the Premier Hockey league at Chandigarh next month, and consider their possible inclusion in the camp. He said that players were undergoing intensive training at SAI in both technical aspects of the game as well as improving their total fitness. Carvalho also reiterated that no player in the camp could take his place in the team for granted. “We have a tough stint ahead of us and every player knows what is at stake,” he added. The process of identifying the main set of players is already underway and after the camp resumes in January first week after a break for the PHL, the numbers are likely to be pruned further. Before the Olympic qualifiers in Chile next March, India will play a series against Belgium at home and take a short tour-cum-training stint down under. — Special Correspondent
