BANGALORE: Rachita Sarda of Karnataka rallied to beat Nidhi of AP 2-4, 4-2, 5-3 in the girls’ under-16 singles opening round of the Good Earth Super Series (under-14 and 16) tennis tournament, which got underway at the KSLTA, here on Monday. In the boys’ under-16 singles, Digvijay Singh of Haryana and Chetan Pandit of AP advanced with easy wins. Earlier on the sidelines of the fourth leg of championship at Bangalore, Good Earth Brand Ambassador and Indian tennis legend, Vijay Amritraj, lauded the efforts of the sponsor, Avesta Good Earth Foods in backing the event. “Junior tennis in the country needs that kind of support and I hope more sponsors, irrespective of the mileage they get, come forward to support junior tennis in the country,” Amritraj said. He also paid rich compliments to the AITA and State associations in promoting junior talent. “I guess next to the United States, we have the largest number of tournaments and it is a matter of time, we find genuine talent with the kind of base that we have in the country,” Amritraj said. Sandip Dang, CEO, Avesta Good Earth Foods Ltd., said that Good Earth was pleased to be associated with the junior tennis programme, while C.S. Sunder Raju, Secretary, KSLTA, said that his association was happy to support such a venture in Bangalore.
