HYDERABAD: The long-pending demand of residents in old city will be fulfilled with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) deciding to lay new sewerage lines in uncovered areas at a cost of Rs. 150 crore. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy will lay foundation stone on November 24 for the new sewerage lines. This was announced by GHMC Commissioner C. V. S. K. Sarma here on Saturday. He was delivering a lecture on “Activities of GHMC” and “New assessment of property tax on non-residential buildings” organised by the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The residents now make do with the sewerage system laid some decades ago. Even 60 per cent of the localities, mostly Chandanagar and its surrounding IT corridors, were not covered with sewerage lines. “Residents are coping with the problem by constructing separate septic tanks,” Mr. Sarma said. The new system would also be provided to these areas soon. He said works would be completed within two years. Dual pipelinePlans were afoot to make a dual water pipeline mandatory in new colonies to ensure residents use drinking water judiciously. At present, drinking water was being used for all purposes, he explained. Over 1,400 open places prone to encroachments have been identified for constructing compound walls to protect them from land grabbers. The corporation was developing user-friendly software to give building permissions online and it may be operational from January 1.
