Mahajan trial: “SMS can be tampered with”

Mumbai: The defence in the Pramod Mahajan murder trial on Thursday successfully demonstrated that an SMS in the mobile phone memory can be tampered with — after failing in the first attempt.

A threatening SMS allegedly sent by accused Pravin Mahajan to his elder brother and late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan is part of the evidence in the trial. Mr. Pravin allegedly shot Pramod last April, and the SMS had been sent prior to the incident. Pramod Mahajan succumbed to the bullet injuries after 12 days in hospital.

The defence had brought in Mr. Hari Krishna, a Pune-based software expert, to demonstrate that an SMS can be fabricated. In the morning, in the first attempt, Mr. Krishna failed to alter an SMS stored in a Motorola handset — exactly similar to the one possessed by Pramod Mahajan.

However, Additional Sessions Judge S. P. Davare allowed him to have another go, and this time he succeeded in altering an SMS, stored in the phone’s memory with the help of a laptop.

The prosecution will cross-examine Mr. Krishna on November 19. — PTI
