Karnataka XI posts win

NEW DELHI: Somanna scored two second half goals as Karnataka XI defeated Indian Universities XI 5-1 to move into the second round of the preliminary knock-out phase in the 44th Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Friday.

Somanna (60th and 62nd minutes) struck after Anup Anthony (19th) and Row Bhengra (35th) had put Karnataka 2-0 up by half-time. K.P. Dinesh (65th) was the other scorer.

For Indian Universities, Navin Kumar (61st) was the lone scorer, the goal coming off a penalty corner conversion.

Karnataka will meet Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) under-21 team on Sunday for the final qualifying match against South Central Railway. IHF under-21 scored a neat 2-0 win over Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) XI with Parmod Kumar (14th) and Cheeyana A.B. (56th) finding the targets.

In the third match, Punjab National Bank XI defeated Corps of Signals 1-0 with Jatinder Saroha striking in the 65th minute. — Principal Correspondent
