Fire leaves slum dwellers homeless

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A major fire that swept through the Singareni Colony in Saidabad on Thursday afternoon left hundreds of slum dwellers homeless. However, none was injured in the mysterious fire in which more than 250 huts were gutted.

This is the second such incident in the same locality. In February 2005, four persons were killed and more than 300 huts gutted in a fire.

The exact cause of Thursday’s fire was yet to be ascertained though the police suspect it to be the handiwork of mischief mongers.

Flames erupted at a corner from a hut abutting Baptist Church around 2.30 p.m., and stoked by winds, engulfed the colony within no time. Gold jewellery, cash, steel utensils, rice bags and other important documents were damaged, the affected families complained. A gas cylinder also exploded.

Hut dwellers ran helter-skelter. “I ran away leaving Rs. 5,000 and gold ornaments in the almirah as fire spread towards my house from the church side. I have lost all the valuables,” said Habeeba Begum, who got married recently.

Yellamma, an elderly woman, claimed that cash and gold jewellery meant for her daughter’s marriage were reduced to ashes.

Some even alleged that damage was more because fire tenders failed to reach on time. Luckily, power supply was disconnected to the area at that time, they explained. Residents also rescued two children.

District Fire Officer G. V. Narayana Rao said six fire tenders were first rushed after receiving the call at 2.35 p.m.. The situation was brought under control within an hour, he said.
