KOLKATA: Holder East Bengal crashed to a humiliating defeat when it was drubbed 3-1 by relegation-threatened George Telegraph in the penultimate round premier division match of the Calcutta Football League here on Thursday.
This result came a day after Mohun Bagan ensured it became the new champion, collecting the necessary points on Wednesday.
In another match of the same division, Mohammedan Sporting beat Eastern Railway 2-0 to better its position in the standings.
East Bengal appeared in complete disarray conceding a three-goal deficit by the first 33 minutes.
George, having won just one match in its previous 12 outings, scored twice through its Nigerian forward Saheed Olowo (24th and 33rd minutes), while Gour Naskar accounted for one in the 29th minute.
East Bengal reduced the margin in the 40th minute with striker Ashim Biswas fetching a consolation goal.
East Bengal remained in the second spot with 25 points, while Mohammedan Sporting climbed to the fourth position with 16 points from 13 matches. — Principal Correspondent
