Don’t dither on women’s Bill any more: federation

NEW DELHI: The Delhi unit of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) on Thursday organised a demonstration to demand the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
Led by general secretary Annie Raja, the protesters condemned the failure of the United Progressive Alliance government to get it passed by Parliament.
She said the Bill, ensuring women’s participation in the decision-making process, had been in the public domain for more than a decade, but in the name of creating a “comprehensive consensus” even the UPA Government had not taken any step to place it before Parliament.
‘Issue can’t be ignored’
“Women’s political empowerment is an issue which no political party can ignore,” she said.
“All our neighbouring countries have more women representatives in their Parliaments than we have. It is shameful that even after 60 years of independence, India — the largest democracy — has only 8.3 per cent women in Parliament.”
The NFIW said the UPA government must show the political will to pass the Bill this session, and should not dither on this issue any more.
