Lyallpur Khalsa SS finishes third

The winner bags Rs. 96,000, while the runner-up gets Rs. 64,000


NEW DELHI: Striker Sukhdeep Singh scored a brace as Government Model Senior Secondary School, Ladowali (Jalandhar) overcame a mid-match slump to down Sat Guru Partap Singh Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib (Ludhiana) 4-2 to win the 36th ONGC-Nehru junior hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Wednesday.

Sukhdeep put the Jalandhar school ahead in the 30th minute, but the Ludhiana school, shot back in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. The Namdharis from Bhaini Sahib held on gamely before three goals in a space of 11 minutes turned the tables in favour of the Jalandhar boys.

After a laid-back first half, Namdharis infused life into the match when Basant Singh scored an opportunistic goal in the 48th minute. Two minutes later, Saudagar Singh put them ahead through a penalty corner conversion.

Stung by the reverses, Jalandhar boys regrouped and Navnesh Kumar found the target in the 57th minute. Manjinder Singh made it 3-2 off a penalty corner in the 58th minute.

Two minutes from close, Sukhdeep scored his second as the Jalandhar boys triumphed to claim the winner’s cheque of Rs. 96,000. Sri Bhaini Sahib boys were richer by Rs. 64,000.

Third place

Earlier in the day, Lyallpur Khalsa Senior Secondary School (Jalandhar) defeated Guru Harkrishan Public School, Shahdara (Delhi) 2-1 to finish third. Lyallpur earned Rs. 32,000 for its efforts.

For Lyallpur, Simranjit Singh (15th minute) and Rajneesh Kumar (33rd) scored. The Delhi school managed to reduce the margin through Mahodara Oram in the 42nd minute.
