SINGAPORE: The death of Congressman Wahab Akbar in Tuesday’s bombing in Manila has turned the spotlight on the Abu Sayyaf group as a possible mastermind behind the terrorist attack. Two persons were killed and 12 injured in the explosion that occurred at the entrance to the main lobby of the Philippines House of Representatives. Mr. Akbar was a Congressman from Basilan island, where Abu Sayyaf had originated. The group, notorious for kidnappings for ransom and brutal executions, turned to political terrorism in the general context of “Islamic insurgency” in the southern Philippines.
